The Physics Nobel was announced today and it went to the main two guys behind COBE.

Reuters article.

I went the planetarium this weekend and it reminded me of back when I was a wee lad and wanted to be a particle physicist/cosmologist. (Those two disciplines are more intertwined than you might think. :) ) Reading about COBE still sends chills up my spine. Experimental verification of a complex abstract mathematical theory about the friggin' origins of the universe.

An appropriate XKCD for this topic:
Science

I think I'm going to order the shirt they have too.

Finally getting around to this.

Again, not nearly as much as issue #1.

Only two this time )

Not as much Chinese as last issue, but here we go:

One third of a real translation )

So, wow, I suck. One out of three. *sigh*

Got the comic, yay! But they were missing two of the covers. :( Should be in by tomorrow. In the meantime... I'm giving translations of the Chinese. Feel free to link to it. (This is a public entry.)

I like Chinese )

I've seen the IMDB top 100 movies meme going around, so I thought I'd take a shot at it. Freshly ganked top 100 list, too. Mmm. I've also included some of the U.S. release titles.

Trimming my flist a bit, both for readability and privacy purposes. No hard feelings, I hope. I guess I might as well change this journal to officially friends only soon. The only public things I've posted lately are memes.

ETA: Friends only banner added to profile. Will be going through old entries again soon.

One of my first LJ entries was a books meme, I guess now is as good a time as any for another. :)

From [livejournal.com profile] kradical:

Books I've read are in bold. Books I've read some of are in italics. Books I haven't read are in Roman. I've starred books which we read/were supposed to read for class.

A whole lotta books )

Damn. I need to read more.

Eh, the top choice sort of makes sense, I guess. Anarchist and cult tied for second? Eek. Of course, that list of categories isn't exactly spanning. *g*

You scored as Lando Calrissian. You are Lando Calrissian. You get to fly the Millenium Falcon. So, you know, I guess that makes you cool and stuff...

Warning: Variety-speak within. Basically, it seems the date change has more to do with an overall shift in Universal's schedule than anything else. Not sure if it makes me feel better or not.

And hopefully y'all have already seen Adam's post on the OB about this, but if not, it's worth a look. What would you do to be at that screening, eh?

Why? Why? I know the rationales, but it doesn't matter. I'm just gonna go sulk in a corner and cry.

You Are From Neptune

You are dreamy and mystical, with a natural psychic ability.
You love music, poetry, dance, and (most of all) the open sea.
Your soul is filled with possibilities, and your heart overflows with compassion.
You can be in a room full of friendly people and feel all alone.
If you don't get carried away with one idea, your spiritual nature will see you through anything.

Um, sure.

BTW? Raisins rule. So there.

Ben Bella still doesn't have it listed in its "upcoming titles" page, but knowing a few more details about the book definitely have me even more excited. What can I say, I'm a lit crit whore. Though the Ben Bella books are a nice balance between way esoteric analysis and fluff pieces. Some analysis, some fun stuff.

Can it be April now?

Since my fandom side dominates the content of my journal, I've decided to make my math geeky side reflected in my layout, at least. After messing around with this S2 thing for a while, this is what I've come up with. All I've changed is most of the text labels and the background.

The theme is... er, graph theory, I guess. Or graph algorithms. Except the background image is a knot. Oh well. Consistency, hobgoblin, etc. :)

So, what do y'all think? Yay, nay, what crack am I on and where can you get some?

Dunno why I'm still up though. That nap really cost me.
